What am I worth?

This was a question posed to me yesterday by my therapist.

‘Imagine it as a title on your blog’ she said. ‘What would you say? I’m trying to challenge you.’

She’d accused me of being obsessed with monetary value, with trying to apply a monetary value to who I am and the things I do.

‘Very early on in this process’ she said ‘maybe in the second session or so, you were quick to tell me that, although you’re financially comfortable, the money you were living off had come to you from your husband in the divorce settlement, and somehow it’s not due to your own efforts’ (or words to that effect – I’m paraphrasing, because I can’t remember exactly what she said).

Which is true. But what I’d just been talking about was the amount of time that goes into things which I know have no realistic possibility of a monetary return, specifically my knitting and crochet (and of course, so obvious that it wasn’t even brought into the conversation, my writing). I’d mentioned that earlier this week I’d been asked how much I would ‘charge’ to make something as a commission – a question I never know how to answer, because half the time I say too much and put them off, and the other half I aim too low, which can also put people off, or just leave me thinking that I’ve undersold myself and somehow failed in that way. Underlying this, I suppose, is an assumption that I am a professional person who sees the things I make in terms of exchange, and has a system for determining prices, whereas from my point of view, they’re just the (rarely useful, and occasionally embarrassing) results of me finding enjoyable ways to pass the time – in other words, hobbies. Incidentally, the word ‘amateur’ comes from the latin word for ‘love’, meaning someone who does something for the love of it, so that a century ago, ‘amateurs’ in most fields (particularly sport) were afforded more respect than supposedly self-serving ‘professionals’.

I know all this, I know that for creative work the price depends on what someone is prepared to pay, rather than the effort that went into doing it, and I also know the argument put forward by creative people that the workman is worthy of his hire. And I know that I’ve never been able to square this circle, and this is a big reason why I’ve never been able to make a success of business, and it all ties up with social anxiety, lack of self belief, and not being able to ask for anything from other people.

But I can’t see the leap from this to the suggestion that I’m fixated on monetary value. She mentioned the struggle to change the law so that it affords value to the traditionally unpaid work of housework and child-rearing, but to me, any capable adult should be able to pay for their own needs. Boxing Day

Definitely not the worst Christmas ever, in fact I’m not sure I’d even add it to the list of ‘bad’ Christmases. Yes it was sad not having the family all together, but the Skyping worked well (after some initial glitches – and for some reason I couldn’t connect the laptop to the telly as I’ve been doing for months for tai chi), opened presents in the morning with my son and daughter-in-law, then later we had dinner ‘together’ (a bit later than I would have liked, as they were late putting their turkey in the oven), and we even watched a film on Netflix ‘together’ after dinner (which I fell asleep in the middle of, even more typical). It was fun cooking my own Christmas dinner, and being in my own home with my little cat – which reminds me that the last time I did that – ten years ago, with a different cat – I went for a walk in the sunshine with snow in the park by the river in Bedford – which I wouldn’t have been doing yesterday, given the reports of flooding. I could have gone for a walk by the seafront, but didn’t have time, what with all the Skyping.

Ten years – I can’t quite believe it. Life goes through its cycles – lying in bed this morning, I was thinking about the bad times – years, not specifically Christmases – and how they seem to come at intervals of three years: I’d started by remembering 2014, then 2011, and 2008… all of them particularly challenging for different reasons. And going forward, what happened in 2017? Oh yes, cancer treatment. So that I guess puts this year on the same trajectory. All of them led, in the early part of the next year, to major turning points: 2009 splitting with my husband, 2012 going travelling and 2015 moving to the south coast – (although 2017 was the exception, because 2018 was also difficult – though that was the year when I started with my current therapist, and was diagnosed with dypraxia, so maybe that was a good turning point too).

Whatever, a new year is a new year, a turning point of sorts, and currently we’re between the astronomical new year (lengthening daylight) and the calendrical one. Usually I wouldn’t be here for the latter either, but life is as it is.

I used to find Boxing Day a massive disappointment – all that anticipation, and suddenly the excitement was over. Today I think I will just take it easy – not that I ever do anything but that these days, but you know what I mean.

I’m not thinking too much about the new year – whatever it brings will come anyway. I’m not sure whether I’ll carry on with blogging – I can’t seem to raise much enthusiasm for it at the moment, that might be a temporary thing, in fact it probably is, given past experience. I guess you could say I’ve lost my sense of agency (and urgency) – but then, it is Boxing Day.

Decisions

She isn’t dead! I knew it! Well, I kept hoping – I’ll admit, I was starting to question my intuition, pretty well given up in fact, then I started the next chapter and – there she was! Only I ran out of time (it was time to get up) so I don’t know yet how she managed to get out of the car wreck (though I know who she’s with now) and she’s clearly been out of it for the last few chapters and only just regained consciousness, because everyone’s been assuming she was dead (whose was the body they dragged out of her car, then?) but that’s something to look forward to, this evening, or tomorrow morning, or maybe I’ll have a crafty read some time today…

Sorry, got a bit carried away there. I told you I was reading a good book. I love it when it grabs you like that – that’s the joy of reading.

Well, yesterday both Portsmouth and Bedford went into Tier 3 Covid restrictions. Which means… well, over Christmas (23rd-27th) the special rules are still in place, so I can legally go. But I’d made a pact with Fate, or the Universe (as I often do when I’m forced to make a decision) that if any of us went into Tier 3, I’d hunker down and spend Christmas here, just me and the cat.

So, decision made, I texted my daughter to tell her I wasn’t coming, then talked it over with my therapist in our weekly Skype session. It was a relief, really, I told her, and myself, because the decision was taken out of my hands. My main worry was how my daughter would react, but I’d decided. At least I’d got rid of that stress over packing etc, and driving.

‘…the stress which you would have anyway, whatever you do…’ she pointed out. Hmm, yes, she knows me too well – that’s her job after all.

After the session, I wrote the family Christmas cards – with a little note in my granddaughter’s saying ‘…sorry I can’t be with you…’ walked to the post office and popped them in the box. Looked (in vain) in Tesco and the Co-op on the way home for anything nice for my Christmas dinner. Bought a small poinsettia and tiny tree in the florist.

Four Christmases ago, when I was waiting for the results of the biopsy, people asked me why I was going away when I might be called back to hospital at any time? And I thought then: ‘this might be my last Christmas, why would I want to spend it on my own?

In the evening my daughter texted again, and then rang and said she’d spoken to her brother, and even though it’s my choice, they’re prepared to come and get me and bring me home so I don’t have to drive, and even her Dad said: ‘…she’ll regret it if she doesn’t…

So the decision changes again. But this time it feels right.

Simple Things

One card to make out of the current batch, then I need to write in them, address them, stamp them and take them to the post office. If they go today, they’re a week ahead of the final posting date. Two more to make, for my children, which I want to make a bit more special, but haven’t got a clear idea yet what I’m going to do. Hopefully I’m going to be able to deliver them both in person, but if not… maybe I should plan on trying to get them posted in advance anyway, because who knows what might happen in the next fortnight?

Yesterday I showed my therapist the Christmas jumper, she seemed particularly excited that it was blue and not red or green. I’ve still got to weave in the ends. Over Skype, she couldn’t see that, or the way the stitches pull around the motifs – besides, she’s not a knitter, so she’s probably impressed that I managed to finish it at all. She said at one point that she was ‘in awe’ of me – I’d rather she admired my writing or my academic prowess than my knitting, but I don’t think she meant that anyway.

She said last week how impressed she was with my routine, how I get up and do my yoga, tai chi and meditation, and then my writing, and yesterday she added to this the way I do my crafting. I showed her the current weather blanket and she asked what I do with them when they’re finished, so I told her the first one is in the spare bedroom, last year’s one went to my son and daughter-in-law and this one’s going to my daughter – to mark for both of them the years in which they got married (my daughter’s idea).

But all of that: getting up at seven (when usually I’ve been awake for at least two hours already), the exercise and meditation, the five hundred words, the square for the weather blanket and other crafts (and the reading, listening to the radio and su doku as well) – is about self-preservation, keeping myself this side of the line that tips over into darkness. I do them because I need to. Yes, I’d quite like it if I was writing a novel, or some great academic treatise that would put the world to rights, but at least all these activities are doable and pretty harmless and don’t involve anybody else. One day, no doubt, I’ll stop doing one or more of them, and then this year will become, not just the (first) Covid-19 year, but the time when I ‘…used to do that stuff’.

Years ago, I used to do cross stitch, and I remember thinking my life was pretty sad on the days when that was the most satisfying thing I’d done – like the wife in the Paul Simon song for whom a good day ‘…ain’t got no rain’. But I’ve learned to appreciate losing myself in simple things.

Home Decor (Part 1)

In a mad moment yesterday, I ordered a book case from Argos. It’s being delivered this morning.

Actually it wasn’t as spontaneous as that made it sound. I’ve been thinking I needed some shelves in my front room for some time now – more or less since my therapist commented on how little she can see of my room on Skype, while I can see quite a lot of hers – bookshelves, and pictures on the wall, and so on. But that is presumably because she sits at a computer which is against a wall or window and is hence facing into the room, whereas I sit on the sofa with my laptop on a stool in front of me, so that I’m facing the room and the screen is facing the blank wall behind me. In other words it depends on perspective – to me her room is elegant and attractive and mine is full of junk which has been shoved out of the way, but to her, mine looks stark, almost Spartan, and gives away nothing about me.

I still haven’t put up many pictures even though I’ve been here four years – I’ve mentioned this before, about the walls being two hard to knock in nails or hooks, and lots of people have advised me to get Command strips, which I did, although first I got cheap Velcro ones which didn’t work, then I got the Command ones and in the summer my daughter helped me to put up one poster and a mirror which I bought in a closing down sale, but I still haven’t done any of the others, mostly because I just don’t think about it. I have a nice picture to go into my spare bedroom/exercise and meditation room, I’ve chosen the perfect spot for it and written it on my to do list, and copied onto the new list whenever I get round to making a new list, but it’s still there because it hasn’t been done yet.

When I was staying with my daughter at the beginning of October, we went to IKEA and I bought a new frame for one of my Paris pictures, because I’d taken it downstairs (in the summer when I was thinking about putting them up), and left it propped in the hall because I didn’t know where to put it or whether I trusted the Command strips to hold such a heavy frame, and it was propped against the wall for a couple of weeks until one day when both the front and back doors were open at the same time and the wind blew it over and the glass broke. So I bought a new frame in IKEA and then realised it was too big to go in my suitcase, and I was going home by train and didn’t want to carry it with me, so it’s still at my daughter’s house waiting for me to go back again and take the car (or for her to drive here, whichever happens first).

Part of an Explanation

In the post-waking and pre-getting up time between 4:30 and 7:00 this morning, because I hadn’t yet started reading anything new on the Kindle, or downloaded the next bit of the podcast I’m listening to (I have to do that in the wifi area, ie front room or study), I was browsing Facebook. On the dyspraxia group there was a post from a 77-year old lady whom I’ve chatted to before (let’s call her Jane, because that’s not her name), with a photo of a letter explaining to her that she isn’t entitled to a diagnosis on the NHS. I feel bad for her, because she can’t afford to get one privately, as I did, but she wants to be assessed to convince her family that she has real problems and isn’t just being difficult, in order to improve her relationships with them, who apparently don’t treat her very well.

But from my experience, quite honestly, my expensive diagnosis doesn’t hold much water with most of the people I’ve tried to explain it to – which is hardly surprising, because, hey, I’m dyspraxic, and not being able to explain things clearly and convincingly is part of who I am. Because there’s so little awareness, and because it’s in many ways more nebulous than, say, dyslexia or ADHD, and the ‘symptoms’ (poor short term memory, poor organisation, poor punctuality, problems with absorbing and processing information which manifest as not listening, not paying attention etc etc etc) appear as the kind of ticks and habits which are frustrating both for the dyspraxic individual and the people they come into contact with – the kind of habits that for most people can be overcome with a little thought and effort, but for someone like me appear insurmountable…

What was I saying before I launched into that mammoth sentence? Oh yes, convincing people that these are real problems that are hard for you to manage, and can they please cut you some slack. Even my therapist doesn’t always get how hard it is to find people who will respond positively to this. She once said: ‘But you have a severe learning disability and you can prove it because you’ve been formally assessed’ – which raises the question: how can that be true when I also have a PhD? (although nobody takes that seriously either). The brain (anybody’s brain, not just mine) is a huge mystery, and the more we learn about it the less it all seems to make sense.

I started wanting to write a comment to my Facebook friend Jane, to tell her that having a diagnosis probably wouldn’t improve her relationships with her family, and the support she gets from the Facebook group is likely to be more valuable. Mine hasn’t allowed me to go back and make more of the opportunities I missed, or help me find new ones, or taken away the sense that my life has been a bit of a shambles – it’s just part of an explanation of why I’m me.  

Seasonal Rant

I spent most of yesterday getting stressed over how much I hate this time of year. All the miserable and uncomfortable Christmases in my life, even though outnumbered by the happy ones, rise up from memory like a dark tidal wave, and completely overwhelm them. I spent the morning working on the weather blanket and listening to podcasts, and then in the afternoon telling the therapist how ashamed I am that that’s all I’ve been doing, as well as about all the dark Christmases there have been in in my life, and how much I hate this time of year – in between bouts of weeping.

We got into the usual argument about what I ‘should’ or ‘shouldn’t’ be doing (‘should’ is like a red rag to a bull for her) and when she asked if it wasn’t just those voices from the past telling me what to do, I got irritated, because, no, it isn’t just that – I know for myself that I would feel better if I did all those things that I ignore in favour of sitting and crocheting.

‘What do you think will happen?’ she asked.

‘Well, it’s not healthy is it? I’d just go into a downward spiral and sink down and down’ I told her, waving my finger round in circles.

‘What’s your worst fantasy of what might happen, if you took it to the extreme?’

To the extreme??? I thought. What a bloody stupid question – like the question about what do you really want from life if money and reality and the law of gravity were no object – what’s the point of asking that?

‘That by the time I was missed, someone would have to break into the house and find me rotting, surrounded by piles of rubbish, and with half my face missing because the cat’s eaten it’ was what I actually said.

I woke as usual at four this morning, but instead of filling the time with podcasts and reading, I spent an hour brooding, just like old times. Then at five, I started reading some more of ‘Out of Sheer Rage’, and to my surprise finished it, although my Kindle said I was only 85% through it – the last 15% was taken up with footnotes and a preview of another book. I was telling the therapist about it yesterday, and how much I’ve enjoyed it, and she asked if it made me feel less alone, which it did, but like the dyspraxia forum in a bittersweet way, because it IS good to know I’m not the only one, but also depressing in that it suggests to me that there really is no way out.

But there are so many bits that I wanted to highlight, and I will share this one:

‘thinking of giving up is probably the one thing that’s kept me going. I think about it on a daily basis but always come up against the problem of what to do when I’ve given up. Give up one thing and you’re immediately obliged to do something else. The only way to give up totally is to kill yourself but that one act requires an assertion of will equal to the total amount that would be expanded (sic) in the rest of a normal lifetime.”

Tangled

Every morning (mostly) I sit down with a blank screen and the faint hope that by the end of 500 words I will have said something worthwhile. Admittedly, five hundred words isn’t much, though some days it’s a struggle to fill it. Sometimes something occurs to me just at the end, which is why the title (always written afterwards) often refers to the final paragraph. Maybe I should carry on beyond 500 words? I tried that two years ago, and I don’t recall it being any more productive. I have a file (Word table) containing extracts taken from these posts that I think might be worth expanding, and the dates when they were posted, but I never look at it. Maybe that’s a project for one day, but I’m guessing there’ll be a lot of repetition and few surprises.

I’ve been thinking about the word ‘should’, which is anathema to my therapist, and most other therapists, coaches and others of that ilk I’ve come across. A couple of weeks ago she asked me whose standard I’m trying to emulate – but when I ask: ‘what should I do?’ I’m asking for help, not to be set a goal. There are many things which, if I did them regularly would I’m sure help make my life less chaotic and more satisfying, but, in the phrase she used last week, I ‘can’t be arsed’. But if she, or anybody else, tried to tell me to do them, I would feel patronised and insulted and do anything to avoid it.  

Half way through, and I gave in and looked at what I wrote yesterday. Ah yes, the quest of the Crescent Moon Bear, and what did you learn from the journey? I enjoy reading her analysis of the stories but don’t find her suggestions of how to apply the lessons to your own life very helpful in a practical sense. This is also true of every self-help book I’ve ever read. I remember my PhD supervisor commenting that I have to think things through from first principles – I didn’t know then what he meant, but I think it’s because I can’t understand an argument unless my head can get inside it and see where it’s coming from, but once I can do that, it seems obvious and I don’t know why everybody else can’t see it as well. It’s like the time I spent last night (about two hours) extracting one single thread from the tangle of the border threads for my blanket. I thought I had them all separated only last week, but somehow just by taking it out of the bag each day, attaching a new square and putting it back again, I now have a hopeless mess. I honestly can’t understand how it happens – presumably it’s dyspraxia-related but I don’t see how.

My thoughts and words don’t want to play the game today either. But putting things down and coming back to them later, trite though it sounds, does work sometimes.

Chasing Rainbows? (to be continued – perhaps)

I keep hinting that there are ‘deeper’ things I want to write about, but that I don’t have time because the trivial everyday things take up my word count, and then I’m done and can leave whatever it is for another day. Except this morning I’m staring at the blank screen and empty Sunday-morning street and not sure how to set foot on this morning’s path, or where it’s going to take me, if anywhere at all.

Thursday’s therapy session was a bit like that. I hadn’t got any major rants to read out, or insights from the week, or anything at all that I could think of to say – not that it had been a perfectly blissful week, but in that moment I wasn’t tapping into anything in particular, so it descended almost into (very expensive) chit-chat. Sometimes it’s like that, but it never means the darkness has gone away for good, and I don’t suppose there’ll ever come a time when it will. There’s still the ongoing issue over housework, with the therapist (who of course has never stepped inside my house) obviously assuming that I’m exaggerating, and falling into the same pattern of people who don’t want to hear the truth as I see it. At one point, as I was trying to explain, she said: ‘that doesn’t sound like dyspraxia so much as you can’t be arsed to do it’ to which my reaction was: yes of course that’s what I’m saying, I can’t be arsed, I’m lazy and don’t take responsibility, how can you possibly not know that when I’ve told you a million times? I didn’t put it in quite those words, but my heart did sink a little to think she really wasn’t getting me at all. When we Skype I sit on the sofa and all she sees is a blank wall behind me, I was going to try doing it in the study last week but remembered at the last minute that there’s no webcam on the PC so that’s no good, maybe I’ll bring the laptop up here next time.

Well, so I did find something to write about which isn’t about causality, creativity, liminality, fate and destiny. Or Women Who Run With the Wolves. This week I read her analysis of the story about the Crescent Moon Bear, which is a version of the Grail story, that the point of the quest is not about the ostensible object, but the lessons you learn from undergoing the quest itself. This is hardly an original thought, but it is an interesting one to reflect upon. When I came back from my original travels, I felt I hadn’t learnt anything at all, that nothing had changed, that I couldn’t run away from myself; and the only lesson when I came back from Prague was there no way on earth I could ever be a teacher. Or maybe the lesson is: you can keep chasing rainbows, but make sure you’re enjoying the chase?

Here We Go Round Again

So far this week: last yoga class before lockdown; last tai chi class before lockdown; last trip out in the van before lockdown. I mentioned last week about my yoga teacher being homeless and having to cancel classes – the next day she sent a text to say that someone had offered her a lift, then came the lockdown announcement, so there was a class on Monday evening, and ditto the tai chi yesterday morning, after which I picked up my camper van from the garage and drove to Queen Elizabeth Country Park on the A3 near Petersfield, and had a walk among the trees and a picnic. I love taking the van there, because there are car parks spread among the trees, often empty (on weekdays when I usually go), so although you can’t actually camp, you can get some of the feeling for a few hours.

The weather has turned dry and sunny but noticeably colder than it was, and today looks to be about the same, with a clear blue sky. I really should get out and do some tidying up in the garden, I tried cutting the hedge on Monday but the trimmer kept cutting out. Because it stopped and later started again, it had to be a loose wire. I took apart the connector that joins it where I cut through the cable in the spring, unscrewed the little screwy things inside, couldn’t see anything obviously loose, then got into a horrible dyspraxic muddle trying to put it back together and gave up for the day.

I read some more of ‘Women Who Run With the Wolves’, this time about creative blocks. The author suggests the usual things: keep trying, don’t self-edit, do a little every day, expect to fail, but keep going anyway. This is what I’ve been doing forever. Back to the old question of whether it matters that it never gets me anywhere? Apparently, it doesn’t. Either one day a miracle will happen and I’ll suddenly start writing something worthwhile, or I’ll be gone and someone will come along and wipe my hard drive and that will be that.

Last week I read the poem about the ‘Wild Thing’ to my therapist, and she said I should try to get it published. I haven’t done anything about it. Strictly speaking, I think posting it on here counts as publication, which disqualifies it from most competitions anyway.

I’ve been thinking about Daniel Defoe’s ‘Journal of the Plague Year’. I think this definitely counts as a ‘plague year’, but I don’t think this journal of mine is in the same class.

My current yoga teacher once said that destiny is what has to happen, but fate is what you make happen (or words to that effect). She is not having a great year, even worse than most of us. But she has faith in the fundamental goodness of the world, and I envy her for that. Today, I fear for the fate of us all.
